October 24, 2009. Durango, CO. - The University of Nebraska-Kearney made quick work of the Fort Lewis College Football team 59-14, earlier this afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. Kearney, who is atop the RMAC with a record of 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the RMAC. Fort Lewis falls to 1-8 and 0-7 in the RMAC.
The first quarter belonged to the Lopers as they put up two touchdowns, the first on a 30 yard pass and the second on a 39 yard scamper . The Skyhawks were able to pull within a touchdown in the first minute of the second quarter when
Tim Jenkins found Phillip Dodd on a deep post route for a 65 yard touchdown and a 14-7 Loper lead. Kearney answered back with 17 points to close out the frst half with a 31-7 lead from a rushing TD, a passing TD and a 32 yard field goal.
The second half started out much like the end of the first with Fort Lewis going four n' out and punting to the Lopers who returned the punt 45 yards for yet another touchdown and 38-7 lead. Fort Lewis would punt again on their next drive and allowing Kearney to drive 39 yards down the field for a 5 yard TD run making it 45-7. However, the Skyhawks had not given up yet. On the ensuing drive, Fort Lewis marched 70 yards in 5 plays when Jenkins found his favorite target Justin Johsnon on a 17 yard slant for the TD, cutting the lead to 14-45. Kearney would find the endzone twice more in the fourth quarter to seal their victory at 59-14.
Fort Lewis racked up an impressive 350 total offensive yards. Jenkins went 30-57 for 294 yards in the air and rushed for 18. Johnson caught 16 passes for 113 yards and completed one pass for 22 yards.
Brandon Schneider tallied 6 catches for 80 yards, while Dodd snagged 2 catches for 69 yards. Phillip Odell led the Skyhawk defense with 15 tackles followed by
Nick Becker who recorded 10 tackles.
The Skyhawks will hit the road next weekend to Las Vegas, NM to take on the Cowboys of New Mexico Highlands. The game is set to kick-off on Saturday, October 31st at 1:00 pm.
