Women's Soccer Earn Win on Senior Day

Hollenga Tallies Four Points in the Victory

November 1, 2009. Durango, CO - On Senior Day for the #12 Fort Lewis Women's Soccer team, the Skyhawks defeated the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves to end the regular season 3-1. Sophomore Hayley Hollenga and freshman Torrey Larson did everything they could to nab the win for their seniors.

In the 28th minute, Elena Benavides had control of the ball near the end line and served in a perfect ball across the goal to Hollenga who was able to place it passed the CSU-P goalkeeper putting the Skyhawks up 1-0. Fort Lewis had several opportunities before halftime outshooting the 'Wolves 12-2 making the CSU-P keeper make 7 saves in the half.

The Thunderwolves evened up the score in the second half in the 67th minute after a shot had deflected off Skyhawk keeper Christine Schmelzle to Sarah Deffit slipping it past Schmelzle with the score now at 1-1.

The Skyhawks never let the Thunderwolves take the lead after scoring two quick goals within 1 minute of each other both from Larson in the 69th and 70th minute. Hollenga recorded her 10th and 11th assists of the season after finding Larson on both of the goals.

The defense played strong with senior center back Nichole Kluk and sophomore Laurel Reinhardt keeping the defensive line very organized making minimal mistakes. Schmelzle only had to make four saves in the match.

Hollenga led the Skyhawks with 6 shots with 5 of those on goal, as Larson followed with 4 and Benavides and senior #Jamie MacArthur each recording 3 shots. The Skyhawks outshot the Thunderwolves 21-6.
