DURANGO, Colo. — Four players scored in double figures as Fort Lewis (10-2 overall, 6-2 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) outlasted New Mexico Highlands (10-3, 6-3) 94-84 in a battle of RMAC men's basketball powers.
DeAndre Lansdowne scored 16 points to go along with seven rebounds (six defensive) and three steals as Fort Lewis won its fourth straight league contest after starting the season 2-2 in conference games.
Matt Morris (15 points, seven rebounds),
Kyle Behrens (12 points) and
David Kanyinda (12 points, three assists) also hit double digits for the Skyhawks.
The Fort Lewis bench played a key role, particularly in the first half as the Skyhawks built a 48-36 halftime lead.
Reserve forward
Josh Cassaday grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a thunderous one-handed dunk over 6-foot-9 Highlands center Marquis Whitt with 7:57 remaining in the first frame to give FLC a 28-21 edge. Less than a minute later, Cassaday had his second monster slam off an assist by
Daniel Steffensen to extend the lead to 32-23.

Matthias Weissl beat the first half buzzer with a tip-in of Cassaday's missed three-pointer to give the Skyhawks their 48-36 halftime margin.
Fort Lewis built its biggest lead of 16 points early in the second half, but watched the pesky Cowboys trim the lead to six on three separate occasions.
Mindaugus Markevicius led Highlands with 18 points, while Momcilo Latinovic and Thomas Manzano each scored 16.
The physical contest featured 52 fouls (30 against NMHU). Each team made the most of its free throw attempts, with the Skyhawks converting 34 of 43 charity shots (.791) and the Cowboys making 22 of 29 foul shots (.759).
Fort Lewis continues its two-game home stand at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night when it hosts Western New Mexico (5-11, 5-4).
