Grizzlies reclaim musket in 46-0 win over Skyhawks

Adams State gains 536 yards in balanced offensive attack

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — Adams State (5-3 overall, 3-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) gained 536 yards to defeat Fort Lewis (2-6, 1-5) 46-0 today at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, recapturing the Springfield .45-70 rifle that serves as the traveling trophy between the two teams.

“We didn't show up today, and that was my fault,” said second-year head coach Cesar Rivas-Sandoval. “I take my hat off to Adams State. They did and they shelled us. They beat us in every phase of the game. We didn't execute. I think we'll turn the corner here eventually and there's reason for a lot of hope.”

Trevor Eggleston completed 25 of 41 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns and added another 34 yards on the ground to lead a balanced ASC attack. Backup quarterback Marc Amos went 2-for-3 for 61 yards and another score.

The Grizzlies' running attack amassed 200 yards on 39 carries. Terjean Saffold had 54 yards on 11 carries and accounted for two first quarter touchdowns — a seven yard scamper around the left side on ASC's first drive and a six yard sweep on its next possession. A two-point rush by James Ackel following the first touchdown and a Dustin Bolt PAT after the second made the score 15-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Eggleston hit Delton Prescott for a seven-yard score midway through the second frame to nudge the margin to 22-0 at halftime — a score that could have been worse if not for a goal line stand by FLC's defense on their own one-yard line as time expired.

Bolt accounted for all 10 of the Grizzlies' third quarter points, on a 22-yard field goal, a 23-yard TD reception from Eggleston, and another PAT.

Prescott caught another four-yard score from Eggleston on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend ASC's lead to 39-0. Mohamad Hasoon capped the scoring with a 48-yard pass from Amos midway through the fourth to account for the final 46-0 margin.

The Grizzlies were lethal on third down, converting 11 of 17 opportunities.

Fort Lewis' offense never got on track, being limited to just 177 total yards, of which only 23 came on the ground. Tim Jenkins completed 14 of 30 passes for 141 yards and was sacked four times.

The Skyhawks had an apparent 53-yard touchdown from Jenkins to Aaron Holt in the fourth quarter nullified on a holding penalty by Steven Lindquist downfield and also had a 34-yard field goal attempt by Ryan Baldwin blocked by ASC's Dereck Johns late in the third.

Jonathan Price caught five passes for 62 yards, while Holt finished with a pair of catches for 37 yards.

Phil Odell led the FLC defense with 12 tackles (nine solo), one forced fumble, and one quarterback hurry. Jamal Campbell added six tackles (three solo) and two pass breakups.

Griffin Ronstadt led ASC's defense with eight tackles (six solo).

Fort Lewis hits the road next weekend to face Chadron State (4-4, 4-2) at noon next Saturday at Elliott Field.
