Romero, Striedel net goals as Skyhawks beat Mountaineers 2-0

Fort Lewis returns to RMAC play at Highlands, Adams State this weekend

GUNNISON, Colo. — Therese Romero and Megan Striedel scored goals as Fort Lewis (7-2-1 overall) defeated Western State Colorado (0-11-0) 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at Gateway Field.
 
Romero's header in the sixth minute ricocheted of a Mountaineer defender to stake the Skyhawks to a 1-0 lead and mark her first career goal.
 
Striedel added insurance in the 83rd minute off an Emma Cannis assist to put FLC ahead 2-0.
 
“We struggled to get into things today, but we battled through our third game in six days,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “We played very well in the last 20 minutes and walked away with our heads up.”
 
Amanda Raso (6-2-1) and Caitlyn Espinosa (two saves) combined for a shutout for the Skyhawks.
 
Meghan Jedrzejewski made nine saves for the Mountaineers, a first-year team that will begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition in 2013.
 
“Western is a well-coached, spirited side,” said Clarke. “They will get better in the years to come.”
 
Fort Lewis outshot WSCU 18-11 overall, 11-2 in shots on goal.
 
The Skyhawks' busy week continues at 7 p.m. Friday, when they travel to Las Vegas, N.M., to face New Mexico Highlands. Fort Lewis wraps up its road trip at 1 p.m. Sunday in Alamosa, Colo., against Adams State
