Alex Herrera recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to a 71-61 home win Sunday night over Colorado Mesa, snapping the Mavericks' six-game winning streak and giving CMU its first
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss of the season.
The win puts the Skyhawks at 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in league play, while the Mavericks post a 7-2 overall mark and a 4-1 league mark.
CMU's Colton Burgon gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the game less than two minutes into the game at 5-3, but senior
Marcus Ayala hit a three-pointer four minutes later to give FLC a 10-8 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Skyhawks were solid on both ends of the court, netting 55.3 percent from the floor (26-of-47), including 52.6 percent from behind the arc (10-of-19). They also posted four blocks against the Mavericks and 30 of their 36 rebounds came on the defensive end of the court.
Herrera added two blocked shots and a steal while going 6-of-8 from the field in his 20 minutes of action. Senior
Torrey Udall, who leads the league in field goal percentage (71.9 percent) chimed in with 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Udall made all but one of his field goal attempts. Ayala sank 6-of-9 field goals, including 3-of-4 three-pointers, as part of his 17 points. He also contributed four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Fort Lewis held Colorado Mesa to a 35 percent field goal percentage (21-of-60), but the Mavericks netted 8-of-15 field goals from long range (53.3 percent). CMU, which received votes in the latest NABC Division II poll, was led by Landon Vermeer (14 points), Mike Melillo (12 points, nine rebounds, three assists) and Burgon. Burgon, who ranks third in the league in scoring, netted 10 points tonight to go with his nine rebounds.
The Skyhawks' three-game home stand will come to a close Monday night as they play host to Western State Colorado University (5-4, 4-1) at 7:30 p.m. Adams State knocked the Mountaineers from the ranks of the RMAC unbeaten tonight with a 101-76 victory.
