Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Senior Emma Cannis scored her third game-winning goal and fifth goal of the season Friday afternoon at Dirks Field as the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team defeated No. 10 Metro State, 2-1.
The win lifted the Skyhawks season record to 12-3-0 and 8-3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss was the first of the season for the 10th-ranked Roadrunners (11-1-3 overall, 9-1-1 RMAC).
The game started two hours and 15 minutes later than originally scheduled due to continuous lightnening delays. Senior Sam Weiss netted her eighth goal of the season at 38:08 to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead at the half. Jordan Hix sent the ball through the midfield for Cannis to finish from 16 yards out. Emma Cannis added an insurance goal at 51:01 off of Shey Haycock's corner kick to boost the lead to 2-1.
With less than eight minutes to play in regulation, the Skyhawks fouled in the box forcing a penalty kick. Abby Rolph's penalty kick attempt hit the post and after several bumper ball attempts Rolph found the back corner of the net to cut the Skyhawks lead to 2-1.
Fort Lewis edged the Roadrunners in shots, 14-11, and corner kicks, 6-5.
The Skyhawks will travel to UC-Colorado Springs Sunday for an 11 a.m. match.
