Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – Facing the fifth ranked team in the nation Saturday afternoon at the DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo., the Fort Lewis College football team couldn't pull off the upset, falling to the undefeated ThunderWolves, 35-3.
The loss puts the Skyhawks at 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSU-Pueblo improves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in league games.
The Pack took a 14-0 lead in the first half before
Connor Fraser made a 37 yard field goal attempt to put the Skyhawks on the board, 14-3 at 5:24 in the second quarter.
On CSU-Pueblo's second drive of the game, they marched 72 yards down the field on six plays. Quarterback Chris Bonner went 4-for-4 on pass attempts to lead the drive. He connected with Paul Browning on a 10-yard pass to give CSUP a 7-0 lead.
With 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Skyhawks turned the ball over on a fumble. CSU-Pueblo responded with a three-play, 76 yard drive to extend the lead to 14-0. Gaita's field goal cut the lead to 14-3 after one half.
In the second half of action, the Pack closed out the third quarter with their third touchdown of the game. Bonner completed an eight yard pass to Stehly Reden for the score.
The Skyhawks last play of the third quarter was a short, 24-yard punt that gave the Pack a 42-yard field. They took advantage of their field position and in five plays later increased the lead to 28-3. The Pack's final score of the game came at 6:11 in the fourth quarter. Marche Dennard rushed for 15 yards before Bonner completed a 34-yard pass to Reden for the fifth touchdown of the game.
Fort Lewis was held to 42 rushing yards and 155 yards through the air. The Pack was able to amass 581 yards of total offense (281 rushing yards).
Dewaun Wesley led the team in rushing with 45 yards on 14 carries.
Max Baiz completed 15-of-32 passes for 155 yards, but was sacked 10 times.
Doyle Bode caught six passes for 48 yards to lead the receivers.
Defensively,
Joey Alvarez accumulated 11 tackles (eight solo), forced one fumble and recovered a fumble.
Broderick Sargent added five tackles, two of which were sacks for nine yards.
The Skyhawks will play their second straight road game of the season on Saturday at Colorado Mines. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
