Skyhawks Fall Short to Yellow Jackets in Season Finale, 17-14

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Despite recording 207 yards of total offense, completing 9-of-9 passes and scoring two touchdowns in the opening quarter, the Fort Lewis College football team fell short in their final game of the regular season, 17-14 to Black Hills State Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
 
Quarterback Jordan Doyle started the game with 12 straight completions, including 117 yards and two scores in the first quarter.  After forcing BHSU to punt on the first drive of the game, Fort Lewis took an early 7-0 lead six minutes into the game.  Doyle and Nova Hardy capped off an eight play, 89-yard drive when Hardy caught an 11 yard pass for a score.
 
After forcing the Yellow Jackets to punt on their next drive, Fort Lewis took a 14-0 lead at 4:37 in the first quarter.  Doyle completed passes to four different receivers, including Hardy who notched his second touchdown of the game on a 12-yard catch.
 
With a 14-0 lead nearing halftime and forcing BHSU to punt on their first five drives of the game, the Yellow Jackets prevented the shutout with an interception returned 83 yards by Brian Baldwin for a touchdown.
 
Black Hills State evened the game with 2:54 left in the third quarter after they scored from a15-play, 80-yard drive, including a fourth-and-two conversion.
 
Fort Lewis' next two drives resulted in punts.  After a 30-yard punt that started the Yellow Jackets on their own 19 yard line, BHSU was able to march down the field to the Skyhawks 17-yard line and make a 34-yard field goal by Christian Parr to give BHSU a 17-14 lead they would not relinquish. On fourth-and-four, the Skyhawks attempted a 48-yard field goal into the wind but came up short.
 
Doyle led the Skyhawks offense with 69 rushing yards and 246 passing yards.  He completed 25-of-35 passes for two scores.  Doyle Bode caught six passes for 66 yards while running back Amery Duncan caught seven for 45 yards.  Hardy accounted for both touchdown scores as he caught four passes for 53 yards.
 
Three Skyhawks tallied double digit tackles.  Joey Alvarez led both teams with 12 tackles (eight solo).  Ryan Ross and Derik Wetzel each added 11, while Broderick Sargent accounted for three sacks (loss of eight yards) and five tackles for a loss of 12 yards, including a forced fumble.
 
The NCAA Division II leader in punting, Scottie Gallardo punted six times for 242 yards (40.3 average), and kicked off three times for three touchbacks (65 yard average).
 
Jeremy Tuten led the Yellow Jackets defense with 11 tackles (nine solo), four tackles for a loss of 11 yards and one fumble recovery.  Ward Anderson completed 16-of-26 passes for 125 yards. 
 
As a team, Fort Lewis put up 392 yards of total offense on 72 plays to BHSU's 279 yards of total offense.
 
The Skyhawks finish the season 4-7 overall and 3-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
