Castanha Kicks the Skyhawks to a 27-24 Win over Adams State

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Kipp Castanha went 4-for-4 in field goals, including the game-winning field goal with no time left on the clock, to give the Skyhawks a 27-24 win Saturday afternoon at home against Ray Dennison Memorial Field in the annual Musket game.
 
The win marked the first time the Skyhawks (4-5, 3-4 RMAC) have defeated ASU (6-3, 4-3 RMAC) since 2010 (W, 14-7 at Adams State on Oct. 23, 2010), and the first time the Skyhawks have defeated the Grizzlies at home since Nov. 2, 1996 (W, 31-9).  Today's win also marked the first time Fort Lewis has won back-to-back games since 2006 when current defensive coordinator Ed Rifilato was head coach of the Skyhawks.  That year, Fort Lewis went 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and defeated Dixie State in the Dixie Rotary Bowl held in St. George, Utah.
 
Adams State tied the game at 24-24 with 33 seconds left in regulation.  On the Skyhawks first play of their final drive, Max Baiz completed a 20-yard pass to Doyle Bode who went out-of-bounds at the FLC 41-yard line.  Baiz next pass to Nova Hardy was incomplete to bring up second-and-10.  Baiz then rushed for five yards and the Skyhawks called timeout with 11 seconds remaining.  After the timeout, Baiz pass was incomplete to Aaron Holt, resulting in another timeout by FLC with seven ticks left in regulation.  On fourth-and-five, Baiz completed a 34-yard pass to Aaron Holt to the Grizzlies 34-yard line.  A personal foul on the Grizzlies (helmet-to-helmet hit) moved the ball to the Grizzlies 11 yard line and an untimed down with 0:00 left in the game.  With the Skyhawks lined up for a 28-yard field goal attempt by Castanha, ASU committed an encroachment penalty that moved the ball up four yards.  Castanha made the 24-yard field goal, giving the Skyhawks the 27-24 win.
 
On the opening drive of the game, the Skyhawks went three-and-out that led to a 51-yard punt by Scottie Gallardo.  Adams State ran two plays before fumbling on their own 46-yard line.  The fumble was forced by Ryan Ross and recovered by Broderick Sargent.
 
Starting on ASU's 46-yard line, the Skyhawks moved the ball 22 yards that resulted in a 41-yard made field goal by Castanha.
 
On the next drive by Adams State, the Skyhawks took a 10-0 lead when Sargent recovered his second fumble of the game, this time on the ASU 35-yard line.  Doyle started the drive with a 13-yard rush, followed by a six yard pass to Amery Duncan.  Doyle rushed again for six yards and a personal foul by the Grizzlies moved the ball to ASU's five yard line. Duncan ran in from thee yards out for a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.
 
A Skyhawks interception at the end of the first quarter started the Grizzlies drive on their 36-yard line.  ASU marched down the field and missed a 27-yard field goal attempt. 
 
Fort Lewis notched another turnover when David Sweet intercepted a pass on the Skyhawks 40-yard line with 6:15 left in the first half.  Fort Lewis failed to score on the drive and headed into the locker room with a 10-0 lead.
 
After a 14-yard kickoff return, Adams State started with the ball to open the second half and quickly drove down the field 86 yards to cut the Skyhawks lead to 10-7.  On the Skyhawks first drive of the half, James Regan intercepted a pass at the FLC 45-yard line and returned it nine yards.  A 15-yard penalty on the Skyhawks moved the ball to the FLC 21-yard line.  Six plays and two minutes and 25 seconds later, Adams State tied the game, 10-10 with a made 22-yard field goal.
 
On the Skyhawks next drive, they went three-and-out.  A 45-yard punt by Gallardo was returned 32 yards to the Skyhawks 48-yard line.  ASU ran five plays and capped off the drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to take their first lead of the game, 17-10, with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
 
Fort Lewis' next drive lasted four minutes and 21 seconds.  Castanha made a 35-yard field goal to cut the Grizzlies lead to 17-13 after the Skyhawks ran 10 plays for 40 yards.  Three drives later, Castanha made his third field goal of the game, this time from 27 yards out.  The Skyhawks trailed ASU, 17-16 with three minutes and 28 seconds left in regulation. 
 
The Skyhawks defense made another huge stand, forcing a three-and-out on the Grizzlies after they moved the ball eight yards.  The Grizzlies 32-yard punt was downed at the 50-yard line.  Baiz rushed five yards before Duncan ran down the middle of the field for a 45-yard touchdown scamper.  Baiz completed a pass to Holt on the two-point conversion to give Fort Lewis a 24-17 lead with 4:16 left in regulation.
 
Three drives later the Grizzlies tied the game, 24-24, when Auston Hillman completed a pass to Taylor Schmidt that capped off a five-play, 48-yard drive.
 
The final drive of the game produced 59 yards of offense for the Skyhawks and nearly 15 penalty yards by Adams State that led to Castanha game-winning field goal.
 
Fort Lewis recorded 275 yards of total offense, 206 of which came from the ground.  They had possession for 34:33 minutes, nearly 10 minutes more than the Grizzlies.
 
Duncan led both teams in rushing with 81 yards.  Baiz, who completed 2-of-9 passes after coming in the game for Doyle (6-of-21, two interceptions), was the Skyhawks second leading rusher with 53 yards.  Bode caught three passes for 35 yards and Holt caught one pass for 34 yards to lead the Skyhawks receiving game.
 
Defensively, Joey Alvarez recorded a game high 11 tackles (10 solo).  He also added two sacks for a loss of nine yards.  Jamal Campbell chipped in 10 tackles and a tackle for a loss of four yards.  As a team, the Skyhawks recorded 63 tackles, seven tackles for a loss of 18 yards, recovered two fumbles, broke up three passes and notched an interception.  
 
Adams State produced 200 rushing yards on 43 attempts and completed 19-of-40 passes for 179 yards (379 yards of total offense).
 
The Grizzlies lead the Musket Game series with Fort Lewis, 32-14-1, and the overall series, 36-15-1. 
 
The Springfield .45-70 military issue rifle that serves as the traveling trophy between Fort Lewis College and Adams State was donated in 1966 by Mahlon "Butch" White, who was involved with the First National Banks in both Alamosa and Durango, in memory of William White. The rifle is retained by the winning school at their annual football game. Traditionally, seniors from the winning team get to fire the rifle at the conclusion of the game.
 
Fort Lewis will play their last road game of the season next Saturday at Chadron State.  Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
