Nick Tomsick scored a career high 34 points Friday night as the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team opened their home and conference season with an 87-75 win against UC-Colorado Springs.
Tomsick scored the first bucket of the game 57 seconds after tip off to give FLC a 2-0 lead. UCCS answered with a basket from Derrick White that tied the game. After
Alex Herrera made one of his 15 free throws on the night to give the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead, they held the lead the rest of game. Herrera's free throws sparked a 16-0 run and his free throw with 2:21 left in the first half gave the Skyhawks their largest lead of the game, 46-21 (25 points).
After a 19-point halftime lead (49-30), UCCS started the second half with a 15-6 run, including four straight made three-point field goals. However, the closest the Mountain Lions would come to the Skyhawks was within seven points.
Tomsick hit 12-of-18 field goals and 6-of-9 three-point field goals as part of his 34 points. He also added three rebounds and two assists. Herrera recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to go with his five blocked shots. Twelve of his 20 points came from the charity stripe, while making 4-of-8 field goals.
As a team, Fort Lewis shot 44.8 percent from the floor (26-of-58) and 52.6 percent from long range (10-of-19).
White, who finished the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds, nearly had a double-double at halftime (10 points, nine rebounds).
Fort Lewis, which improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, will play host to CSU-Pueblo Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
