Sam Weiss (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton HS) converted on a penalty kick to the left side of the goalie in the 102
nd minute to give the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team a 1-0 win at Angelo State University. The win was the Skyhawks second double overtime win in three games.
"We found a way to win the game," said head coach Damian Clarke. "I think Angelo State came out physical, and they played well. They played good futbol and we didn't quite come out to compete, but we did a little bit later in the game. We kept them in their half in the overtime periods."
Fort Lewis College, which improves to 3-0-0 overall, posted seven shots, five of which landed on goal. Angelo State, which drops to 1-2-1 overall, netted 16 shots overall (11 shots on goal).
Caitlyn Espinosa (Rio Rancho, N.M./Cleveland) made 11 saves against ASU. "Caitlyn was very good," said Clarke. "She was key to us winning that game. She made a handful of saves that were fantastic."
The Skyhawks will continue their road trip on Sunday when they face Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m. (CDT).
