Box Score ODESSA, Texas – Junior forward
Emma Cannis (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) led the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon against Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas.
"We came out sharp and played pretty well, but we lacked a little bit in the final third," said Fort Lewis College head women's soccer coach Damian Clarke. "We know what areas we need to work on. We passed the ball better today than on Friday. It's good to finish undefeated in the region (vs. non-conference opponents), but we would have liked to have been more decisive today."
Cannis' game-winning goal came off an assist from
Jordan Hix (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) at 18:15 in the first half. Hix won a tackle then passed the ball over the back four that led Cannis to the goal.
In the second half at 71:35, Cannis struck again. This time from senior
Nicole Schumacher (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) who passed a cross ball from the right side that Cannis scored on from a header.
"Our defense looked good," said Clarke. "They only allowed UTPB to get off two shots. We showed what we could do in the back."
Sophomore
Caitlyn Espinosa (Rio Rancho, N.M./Cleveland) earned her fourth straight shutout of the season after making two saves against the Falcons.
The Skyhawks will play their first home game and their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the season on Friday at Dirks Field against Regis University (2-1) at 3:30 p.m.
