Women’s Soccer Post Sixth Win of the Season

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Facing each other for the second time in three days, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team defeated New Mexico Highlands University Wednesday afternoon, 2-1, at Dirks Field.  Today's win moves the Skyhawks to 6-0-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
The game was originally scheduled to be played this past Sunday, but weather forced the game to be cancelled in the 68th minute with the Skyhawks leading, 4-0.
 
After a scoreless first half, the Skyhawks Brooke Milliet took a cross pass from Sam Weiss to give Fort Lewis a 1-0 lead at 53:53.  Eight minutes later the game was knotted when New Mexico Highlands scored the first goal on the Skyhawks all year.  Grace Thompson played a rebound off the post from Andrea Duke's shot attempt that ended the Skyhawks 553:10 minutes of shutout soccer.
 
With twenty-four minutes left in regulation, Nicole Schumacher netted the game-winning goal on a free kick 30 yards out.  Both goals scored by Milliet and Schumacher were their first of the season.
 
Fort Lewis out-shot the Cowgirls 9-1 in the first half, but NMHU answered with a 7-3 shot advantage in the second half.  Weiss led all players with three shots in the game.
 
Caitlyn Espinosa stopped two of three shots on goal to earn her sixth win of the season.
 
Fort Lewis will travel to Western State Friday afternoon for a 3 p.m. match.
