GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After 101 minutes of scoreless action, senior
Therese Romero found the back of the net with 8:45 left in double overtime to lift the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Texas A&M-Commerce.
"It was a crazy game," said Fort Lewis head women's soccer coach Damian Clarke. "Commerce is a tough team. They are really physical and athletic and they are very direct, which made it very difficult for us to play. Those are the types of games that we fear because it's not how we want to play. We had to battle the whole time but we shut some people out."
The Skyhawks dominated offensively, outshooting Texas A&M-Commerce 17-6 in the four periods, including 8-0 in the second half. Both teams faced off five times on corners kicks.
Nicole Schumacher and
Sam Weiss each notched three shots on goal and accounted for seven total shots.
"They're going to beat a lot of teams," said Clarke of Texas A&M-Commerce. "They are a lot better than they were last year. We won an ugly game which is huge for us. The entire second half we were dominating. We were definitely different in the second half. We won the ball more times. We played well to negotiate the game. We showed a lot of maturity today."
Caitlyn Espinosa played all 101:25 minutes in goal for the Skyhawks, stopping all three shots on goal attempts.
TAMU-Commerce was led by Brionna Minde with two shots, both of which were on goal.
The Skyhawks (1-0, 0-0 RMAC) will be back in action Sunday afternoon at Walker Field in Grand Junction, Colo. when they face Midwestern State at 12 p.m.
