Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Fort Lewis College football team opened their 2013 season with a 49-0 setback to Division I Southern Utah University Saturday night in Cedar City, Utah.
The Thunderbirds capitalized on the Skyhawks turnovers, scoring six of their seven touchdowns on turnovers. All five fumbles committed by Fort Lewis resulted in SUU touchdowns, including an interception in the first half.
The Skyhawks were able to slow the Thunderbirds down in the second half, allowing only one score in the third quarter and holding SUU scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Two of SUU's fumble recoveries in the first quarter were run back for touchdowns. The Thunderbirds quarterback Aaron Cantu completed four of his 15 pass completions for touchdowns. Malik Brown scored the only touchdown of the second half with a five yard scamper.
Ten of the Skyhawks 13 first downs came through the air as sophomore
Jordan Doyle (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Ellsworth CC) completed 18 of 29 passes for 166 yards (two interceptions). Eight different receivers caught passes from Doyle. Junior
Maurice Anderson (Mobile, Ala./Auburn) notched four catches for 42 yards while senior
Aaron Holt (Rio Ranch, N.M./Rio Rancho HS) tabbed five receptions for 41 yards.
The Skyhawks punted five times against SUU. Junior
Scottie Gallardo (Alamogordo, N.M./Colorado) averaged 52 yards on four punts. His longest punt of the game went 63 yards.
Defensively, senior
Jamal Campbell (Stockton, Calif./Lincoln HS) led both teams with 10 tackles. Eight of his tackles were solo stops to lead both teams. Junior
Derik Wetzel (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus HS) added nine tackles, one of which was a sack for a two yard loss. The Skyhawks totaled 11 tackles for a loss of 24 yards. Two of the tackles were sacks that set SUU back eight yards.
Cantu completed 15 of 16 passes for 136 yards and four scores. Mike Sharp led both teams with 67 rushing yards on 10 carries. As a team, SUU combined for two sacks (19 yards), six tackles for a loss (28 yards), recovered five fumbles for 148 yards, and tabbed two interceptions.
The Skyhawks will return home for their first home game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. when they face NAIA opponent Oklahoma Baptist.
