Women’s Soccer Improves to 2-0

Romero nets second straight game-winning goal

Box Score

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Senior Therese Romero (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) scored her second straight game-winning goal to help the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team improve to 2-0.  The Skyhawks posted a 2-0 win over Midwestern State Sunday afternoon from Walker Field in Grand Junction, Colo.

"They're a team we like playing against," said head coach Damian Clarke of Midwestern State. "They are a good team that tries to play with each possession."

Redshirt freshman Jordan Hix (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS) assisted on Romero's goal, just 2:28 into the game.  Hix played the same role again at 83:57 when she assisted senior Emma Cannis (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) on an insurance goal.

"We scored a great goal to start the game," said Clarke. "Jordan played the ball to Therese who found a good shot just outside the 18.  We played really well the next 15 mintues.  The beginning of the second they (MSU) came into it. It was a tough game for 30 minutes in the second half.  We made a good defensive effort to keep things where they were.  The last 15 minutes we got behind them. MSU's goalie did very well to keep us out.  She made some good 1-on-1 saves to keep them in the game.  Jordan broke free on the flanks that allowed Emma to score the second goal."

Fort Lewis dominated the offense, out-shooting Midwestern State 16-4.  Sophomore Caitlyn Espinosa (Rio Ranch, N.M./Cleveland) played all 90 minutes in goal, posting three saves. All three saves came in the second half.

The Skyhawks will remain on the road this weekend when they face Angelo State on Friday and Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday.
