Herrera Leads Skyhawks to 87-82 Road Win

Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Junior center Alex Herrera recorded his seventh double-double of the season and his 20th career double-double Friday night to help the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to an 87-82 road win against Colorado Christian University.

Herrera scored a team and game high (tie) 24 points after sinking 10-of-14 field goals and all four free throw attempts.  He also pulled down a game high 12 rebounds and blocked three shots.

"Anytime you get a win on the road, especially when it's against a team you're tied with in the standings is enormous," said Fort Lewis College associate head men's basketball coach Bob Pietrack.  "We're really happy with our rebounding advantage (46-31), but we need to cut down on turnovers (16)."

The win improves Fort Lewis to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Christian moves to 10-6 on the year and 8-4 in league games.

After the score was tied for the 12th time of the game, Herrera went to the line and made two free throws to give Fort Lewis a 60-58 lead they would not relinquish with 12:47 left in regulation.

Senior guard Nick Tomsick added to the Skyhawks offense, which is ranked as the 11th highest scoring team in Division II, with 20 points. Tomsick went to the line 11 times and sank nine attempts as part of his 20 points.  The Skyhawks bench outscored CCU, 27-15, with Cade Kloster leading the bench play with eight points.

Fort Lewis made 49.2 percent from the floor (30-61) and 72.4 percent from the charity stripe (21-29).  The Skyhawks defense held the league's leading offensive team to 10 fewer points than their season average of 92.4.  Kyle Weaver led the Cougars with 24 points and four assists.

The Skyhawks will travel to No. 11 Colorado Mines Saturday night.  Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
