Juquelle Thompson in the endzone with 3:46 left in the fourth quarter to give the Skyahwks a 23-22 lead and the eventual win over No. 2 Colorado State University-Pueblo Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
The Skyhawks win ended the Pack's 42-game regular season winning streak.
Despite missing the two-point conversion that would have put the Skyhawks up by three points with 3:39 left in the game, FLC's defense held the ThunderWolves on their own half of the field to close out the Pack's second to final drive. On first-and-10 from their own 34-yard line, the Pack's Chris Bonner threw a pass to Cameron McDondle for a four yard loss, thanks to
Ryan Ross' tackle. A holding penalty by CSUP was tacked onto the play to push the Pack back to their 24-yard line. On first-and-20, Bonner completed a pass to Jarred Radebaugh for an 11-yard gain, but an offensive pass interference penalty pushed the Pack to their own 12-yard line. Bonner then completed an 18-yard pass to Daniel Wise to place the Pack on their 30-yard line. After two incomplete passes and back-to-back timeouts by CSUP, the Pack threw another incomplete pass to turn the ball over on downs with 2:20 left in regulation.
The Skyhawks went four-and-out and then held CSUP to four and out with 32 seconds left to clinch the upset win.
Fort Lewis scored on their opening drive of the game. Doyle found Gillen in the back left corner of the endzone for an 18-yard completion that capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive.
The Skyhawks defense held the Pack to only three yards on three plays on their opening drive.
Colorado State-Pueblo earned its first seven points of the game after Josh Bredl returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown.
The Skyhawks were forced to punt on their next drive which resulted in a field goal by the Pack to end the first quarter with a CSUP 10-7 lead.
In the first drive of the second quarter, the Skyhawks marched down the field 75 yards on eight plays to notch their second score of the game. Doyle rushed into the endzone from one yard out but fumbled in the endzone.
Austin Shaw jumped on the ball to recover the fumble and put the Skyhawks on top again, 14-10.
The ThunderWolves cut the lead to 14-13 on their next drive after Greg O'Donnell made a 34-yard field goal. O'Donnell connected again from 25-yards out to give the Pack a 16-14 lead.
FLC headed into halftime trailing by two points, 16-14. A normal 20-minute halftime turned into a two hour, 15-minute weather delay.
Both teams returned to the field at 3:15 p.m., over three hours after kickoff.
The Skyhawks, who won the coin toss at the beginning of the game and elected to receive, started the second half with an on-side kick, recovered by
Theo Chambers.
Fort Lewis started the second half on their own 48-yard line and drove down 50 yards. The Pack's defense held the Skyhawks on the CSUP five-yard line three times, forcing a 20-yard field goal attempt which
Kipp Castanha put successfully put through the uprights.
Leading 17-16 after three quarters, Colorado State-Pueblo scored a touchdown after J.B. Matthews rushed in from four yards out. The Pack's attempt at a two-point conversion failed when
Theo Chambers intercepted the pass in the endzone.
Starting on their own 25-yard line with 9:55 left in regulation, the Skyhawks ran eight plays for 37 yards but were forced to punt from the CSUP 38-yard line. Castanha's 12-yard punt hit a Pack special team's player which was then recovered by
Austin Nelson. The Skyhawks turned around to start the drive on CSUP's 26 yard line. Five plays later the Skyhawks scored on the reverse play, leading 23-22 with 3:39 left.
Fort Lewis totaled 410 yards of total offense on 85 plays. Colorado State-Pueblo tacked on 342 yards on 64 plays.
Hall led both teams with 174 rushing yards on 28 carries. Doyle added 47 yards on 15 carries. He completed 18-of-30 passes for 177 yards and one score. Thompson caught four passes for 26 yards and a touchdown, and
Andrew Johnson added 40 yards on three carries. Gillen went 1-for-1 in passing for a touchdown and he caught three passes for 23 yards and a score.
Thompson returned two punts for 11 yards and two kickoffs for 36 yards.
Joseph Cavale averaged 63.5 yards on four kickoffs (one touchback).
The Skyhawks defense was led by Ross' 11 tackles (five solo) and one tackle for a loss of four yards.
Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo notched six tackles, two of which went for a loss of 12 yards. Derek Wetzel added three tackles, two tackles for a loss of seven yards and a sack for a loss of four yards.
The win moves FLC to 2-4 on the year and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss was the first of the season for Colorado State-Pueblo as they move to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC.
Fort Lewis will play their Homecoming game on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Colorado School of Mines. The game will be nationally televised by CBS Sports.
