Women’s Soccer Posts 1-1 Tie against Cowgirls

DURANGO, Colo. – October 12, 2014 – For the fifth time in six home games this season, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team played to a double overtime draw at Dirks Field.  This time the Skyhawks found the back of the net as they tied New Mexico Highlands University, 1-1 Sunday afternoon.  The other four double overtime games resulted in a 0-0 tie.

Alicia Sanchez snapped the Skyhawks 478 scoring drought at Dirks Field when she gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead at 19:42.  Brooke Milliet made a cross pass from the left side over to the far right corner of the goal where Sanchez finished from five yards out.

The Cowgirls Mallory Bostic knotted the game 10 minutes later when she dribbled the ball down the center of the field and went one-on-one with the Skyhawks goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa.

The goal was technically the first goal scored on the Skyhawks this year.  Fort Lewis defeated Texas Woman's University to a 2-1 in the season opening game on Sept. 4.  TWU's goal was scored as an own goal when the ball went off a Skyhawks defender.

Fort Lewis tallied 17 shots in the game (six on goal).  Sanchez led both teams with six shots (three on goal).  The Cowgirls recorded 15 shots (five on goal).

Espinosa made four saves in 110 minutes.  She is 4-3-3 on the year between the posts.

Fort Lewis (4-3-5, 3-1-4 RMAC) will face Colorado Mines at home this Friday at 12:30 p.m.
