GOLDEN, Colo. –
Zac Lawrence assisted his brother
Luke Lawrence with 1:43 left in the first overtime period to lead the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Colorado School of Mines Friday night.
The win improves the Skyhawks record to 10-7 overall and 8-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Both records now match the Orediggers records after tonight's contest.
"I am extremely proud of our players again," said Fort Lewis College head men's soccer coach
Oige Kennedy. "They always face adversity in the correct manner. It's been a tough few weeks on the road but they have worked very hard and gotten results against very good teams. The quality of their football tonight was top drawer. They really try and apply how we want to play at Fort Lewis and I am so proud of their work rate and effort. Mines is a very strong team and especially at home they are always a difficult opponent to come up against. But again, our guys worked so hard on the practice field this week to come here and earn three points. I think the strength of character they display on a daily basis is the reason why they are still going at this point after what has been a tough season. Fort Lewis soccer has been born out of determination and desire to keep going to the end and this is what these guys are doing."
Luke Lawrence scored the first goal of the game at 30:16 on an assist from
Alberto Capdepon. The Orediggers Nikolaus Grotz tied the game at 1-1 at 55:05, sending the game into overtime.
The Skyhawks dominated the shots output, almost doubling the Orediggers effort, 29-16 (15-9 shots on goal).
Yannis Becker recorded a game high nine shots and five shots on goal.
Luke Lawrence chipped in seven shots and six shots on goal.
Lawrence's two goals were his sixth and seventh of the season, ranking him second on the team in goals scored behind Becker (10).
Fort Lewis will play their final regular season match Sunday afternoon at home against Colorado Christian at 1 p.m.
