GOLDEN, Colo. – November 29, 2014 – University of California-San Diego handed the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team their first loss of the season Saturday night from Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colo. The Skyhawks fell to the Tritons, 83-71. FLC moves to 5-1 on the season and UCSD evens their season record at 2-2.
"We have to give UCSD a ton of credit," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach
Bob Pietrack. "They made a ton of long shots and it was too many to overcome. We will regroup and get ready for RMAC play."
Both teams made over 50 percent of their shots from the floor. The Skyhawks netted 23-of-44 for 52.3 percent, 8-of-19 from long range (42.1 percent) and 17-of-21 free throws (81 percent).
The Tritons, coming off of their first loss of the season Friday night to Colorado School of Mines, made 31-of-61 field goals (50.8 percent), 16-of-35 three-pointers (47.5 percent) and all five free throws.
The Skyhawks committed five fewer fouls than UCSD (14-19) but attempted 16 more free throws (21-5).
Fort Lewis out-rebounded UCSD, 28-25, but committed 18 turnovers to the Tritons nine.
Four Skyhawk starters scored in double figures.
Rasmus Bach led Fort Lewis with 14 points. Bach made all five field goal attempts, including a three-point field goal, and 3-of-5 free throws.
Alex Herrera was held to a season low 11 points after making 4-of-10 field goals. He added 11 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double.
Jared Smith and
Cade Kloster each netted 10 points. Smith added three assists and two steals. Kloster made 3-of-5 field goals, 2-of-4 three-point field goals and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.
The Tritons Drew Dyer led all scorers with 22 points.
Fort Lewis will remain on the road next weekend to open conference play, facing UCCS on Friday and Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday.
