ALAMOSA, Colo. – September 17, 2014 –
Cesar Castillo and
Tamino Kroeger scored two goals and
Ryan Schaul tallied two saves to lift the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team to their first shutout of the season Wednesday afternoon. The Skyhawks defeated Adams State University, 2-0, in the opening game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.
"I am very happy with how we reacted to a tough travel schedule," said Fort Lewis College head men's soccer coach
Oige Kennedy. "The guys haven't had a lot of recovery time between games so we were happy with the performance today and had to battle with a much improved opponent."
The Skyhawks returned home Monday night from a two game trip to Laredo, Texas, and left for the conference opener less than 24 hours later.
Castillo notched the game-winning goal at 17:24, marking his second goal of the season.
Austin Derksen earned the assist on a cross pass to Castillo.
Less than four minutes before regulation ended,
Yannis Becker assisted
Tamino Kroeger for an insurance goal. Kroeger has a team-leading four goals this season.
Becker led both teams with four shots (there shots on goal). Fort Lewis outshot the Grizzlies, 10-7 (5-2 shots on goal). Schaul played all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves for his first shutout of the season.
"The coaching staff at Adams has done a great job of getting better each season and we saw that today," said Kennedy. "Their players work extremely hard and pressured us for 90 minutes so I was glad to see us move the ball as well as we did. It was a good first three points for us in the league and ASU will be a tough road trip for a lot of RMAC schools. We had to work very hard for each other to get our first clean sheet of the season which was an important step in the right direction. We have scored eleven goals in our first five games so it's good to see us keep our opponent out and restrict their goal opportunities. The guys will have to recoup quickly and get ready to leave for Denver this weekend and look to continue the good start we have made to our league campaign."
Fort Lewis will continue their road swing Sunday in Lakewood, Colo. at Colorado Christian University. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
