Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Sept. 21, 2014 –
Yannis Becker had a foot in both goals Sunday morning as the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated Colorado Christian University, 2-1, from Lakewood Trailblazer Stadium. The win moves the Skyhawks to 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"I thought we played well today and kept control of the game with possession of the ball and created a lot of chances in our attacking third," said Fort Lewis College head men's soccer coach
Oige Kennedy. "Our opponent worked extremely hard and again their team was very disciplined in how they defended. I think it's another indication of how much soccer in the RMAC has improved and how much better teams are getting which is a great credit to Coach Evans at CCU."
Becker made a low cross pass to
Tamino Kroeger who finished from six yards out to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead at 26:44. Kroeger's goal was his team leading fifth of the season.
With 20 minutes remaining in regulation, Becker found the back of the net unassisted for his third goal of the season. The goal would eventually be the game-winning goal as CCU's Luke Burgaard scored a goal for the Cougars with three and a half minutes left in regulation.
The Skyhawks out-shot the Cougars 15-6 (8-2 shots on goal).
Luke Lawrence and Becker led the Skyhawks with three shots each.
Ryan Schaul earned his third win of the season between the posts. Schaul made one save in 90 minutes.
"I think the only negative for us today was not picking up our second clean sheet in a row," said Kennedy. "Games like that are very difficult for Ryan because he hasn't had a lot to do for the majority of the match and a lack of concentration cost him. He is a hard working player and he will work hard this week in practice in preparation for the next games. I know after spending so long on the road we are excited to get back to Durango and Dirks Field for what will be an exciting weekend of soccer against the top teams."
The Skyhawks will return home this weekend to start a three game home stand. FLC will play host to UCCS on Friday at 2:30 p.m., Regis University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., and Adams State on the following Friday at 3 p.m.
