2014 Skyhawks Football Game Day Notes - Sept. 22, 2014

The Skyhawks opened the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season with a 40-14 setback at Black Hills State.

WR JORDAN GILLEN caught his first touchdown pass of the season. Gillen finished the game with four catches for 32 yards.
 
DB JAKE FAUST led the Skyhawks defense with 13 tackles (six solo). In three games this season, Faust has a team high 28 tackles with a team high 15 solo stops.
 
Fort Lewis had seven turnovers against the Yellow Jackets (three interceptions, four fumbles).
 
The Yellow Jackets scored 26 points off of the Skyhawks turnovers.
 
The Skyhawks are averaging 84 plays per game and 384 yards of total offense per game.
 
Fort Lewis has scored 14 points off of turnovers. Conversely, their opponents have scored 93 points off of FLC turnovers.
 
Dating back to last year's season ending game, the Skyhawks have thrown a pass for a touchdown in four straight games.
 
Faust leads the league in tackles for defensive backs. He ranks sixth overall for most tackles (28) behind five linebackers.
 
Fort Lewis is the most penalized team in the conference. FLC has committed 27 penalties for 278 yards (92.7 yards per game). They also draw the most penalties from their opponents (23-349 yards).
 
Fort Lewis' 102 minutes of possession is a league high (34:01 average). Saturday's opponent, New Mexico Highlands, ranks last in the league in possession time (25:29 average).
 
QB JORDAN DOYLE, last week's RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, ranks eighth in the league in rushing (68.3 yards per game) and fourth in passing average per game (281.7 yards).
 
WR ANDREW JOHNSON (5.3) and WR NOVA HARDY (5.0) rank seventh and ninth, respectively in the league in receptions per game. Johnson has the fifth most receiving yards with 89.3 yards per game, and WR ESLEY SIMMONS III has the 10th most with 63.7.
 
The Skyhawks will face a potent offense in their home opening game this Saturday against New Mexico Highlands University. The Cowboys lead the league in passing offense with 472.7 passing yards per game, passing efficiency (148.9), and they are second in total offense with 254 plays for 1,602 yards.
 
On the flip side of the Cowboys passing offense, they have the second worst passing defense in the league, giving up 345.7 passing yards per game.
 
The NMHU duo of quarterback Lance Orender and wide receiver Tyler Slavin is the top in the RMAC. Orender leads the league in passing (457.0 yards per game) and total offense (187 plays, 461.3 yards per game), while Slavin leads the nation in both receptions (34) and receptions per game (11.3). He also leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in touchdown receptions (six) and is second in reception yards per game (126).
 
Defensively, NMHU is led by Jared Koster and Brandon Brown. Both rank in the top five in the conference in tackles. Koster has a league high 15.3 tackles per game and a league high six tackles for loss (19). Brown is fifth in the RMAC in tackles with 29 (9.7 per game).
