Football Falls to Nationally Ranked CSU-Pueblo, 45-9

PUEBLO, Colo. – October 10, 2015 – The seventh ranked team in the nation held the Fort Lewis College football team to nine first half points and scoreless in the second half Saturday afternoon.  Playing their Homecoming game, No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo posted 45-9 win at ThunderBowl Stadium.
 
The loss was the Skyhawks first of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season and first to an NCAA Division II opponent.  FLC moves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.
 
CSU-Pueblo scored on the very first play of the game when AJ Thompson connected with Kieran Duncan for a 70-yard touchdown.
 
Senior placekicker Kipp Castanha cut the lead to 7-3 after making a 21-yard field goal with 6:13 left in the first quarter.  Two plays later the Pack scored again for a 14-3 lead.
 
Trailing 28-3 with 20 seconds left in the first half, quarterback Jordan Doyle found Jordan Gillen for a 50-yard score.  A missed extra point attempt cut the Pack's lead to 28-9. 
 
On the ensuing kickoff, Theo Chambers forced a fumble and recovered it on CSU-Pueblo's 30-yard line with 12 seconds left in the half.  The Skyhawks ran two plays before the half ended to enter halftime trailing 28-9.
 
CSU-Pueblo came out of halftime to score 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to seal the win, 45-9.
 
The Skyhawks tallied 78 yards on the ground and 143 through the air.  They held the ThunderWolves to 143 passing yards but CSUP racked up 311 rushing yards.
 
Gillen led the Skyhawks offense with four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Doyle completed 10-of-18 passes for 120 yards.
 
Daniel Walker led both teams with a season high 13 tackles (six solo).
 
Fort Lewis will travel to No. 8 Colorado School of Mines next Saturday for a 12 p.m. game.
