DURANGO, Colo. – February 20, 2015 -- The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team held Metro State University Denver to a 27.3 field goal shooting percentage and only 15 made field goals (15-of-55) on their way to a 64-49 home win over the Roadrunners Friday night in Whalen Gymnasium.
Both teams entered the contest with identical records (13-9, 10-8 RMAC) and in a three way tie for sixth place in the RMAC standings. The win improved the Skyhawks to a three way tie for fifth place with Regis University and Black Hills State.
The Skyhawks seven point halftime lead extended to as many as 15 points in the second half with 2:53 remaining in regulation. The Roadrunners took advantage of the Skyhawks not scoring a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the second half as MSUD went on a 15-6 run to tie the game, 41-41.
Fort Lewis held a two point lead with less than seven minutes remaining and sparked a 15-2 run that gave them a 15 point lead.
Kylie Santos matched a career high and scored a game high 16 points. She also added 11 rebounds and three assists.
Mary Brinton netted 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds and stole the ball twice.
Kate Bayes came off the bench to chip in 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Skyhawks made 20-of-58 field goals for 34.5 percent. After shooting 0-for-6 in the first half from three point range, the Skyhawks made 3-of-9 in the second half.
Fort Lewis out-rebounded MSU Denver, 47-41 and out-scored them on second chance points, 13-4.
The Skyhawks will play their final regular season home game Saturday night against Regis University. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
