GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – February 28, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team's bid to snap Colorado Mesa University's 50 game home winning streak fell short Saturday night at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colo., 66-52.
The Skyhawks wrap up the regular season 16-10 overall and 13-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Mesa wins their third straight RMAC championship and improve to 22-4 overall and 19-3 in the league.
Fort Lewis' 13-9 RMAC record ties them with Black Hills State University for fifth place in the standings. BHSU wins the tiebreaker over FLC after defeating the Skyhawks earlier in the season. The Skyhawks are the sixth seed in the tournament and will play at No. 3 seed Colorado Christian University Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round.
"It was a tough game tonight; turnovers was the real key," said head coach
Jason Flores. "That's the story of the game. If we don't turn the ball over then we're right there in the game. It would have been a lot closer game than what the score showed. We have to learn from that and quickly move onto playoff mode and that's our whole focus now."
The Skyhawks had a strong first half, netting 41.7 percent from the floor (10-24) and 13-of-14 free throws for 92.9 percent. FLC held a 23-10 rebound advantage over CMU in the first half, including 8-4 on the offensive glass.
Fort Lewis led 33-32 at halftime but the Mavericks out-scored FLC in the second half, 34-19. CMU used a 17-4 run in the second half to take a 57-46 lead with 4:02 left in regulation.
Mary Brinton scored a team high 19 points and pulled down a career high 15 rebounds. Brinton made 5-of-11 from the floor and 9-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Kaile Magazzeni added 12 points, eight rebounds and dished out a game high five assists.
Skylyn Webb tallied eight rebounds, seven points and four assists.
The Skyhawks were held without a three-point field goal for only the second time this season. FLC finished the game making 18-of-50 field goals (36 percent) and 16-of-22 free throws (72.7 percent).
FLC out-rebounded the Mavericks by 22, 47-25, and 17-8 on the offensive boards. Fort Lewis committed 25 turnovers compared the Mavericks nine. CMU scored 25 points off of the Skyhawks turnovers.
Leanndra Gilbert led all scorers with 21 points.
