PUEBLO, Colo. – March 14, 2015 –
Taylor Cabrera,
Sara McMahon and
Ellie Carpenter each scored three goals as the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team defeated Colorado State University-Pueblo Saturday afternoon at the Gonzales Lacrosse Complex, 15-7.
McMahan scored the first goal of the game just 11 seconds in, followed by her second goal on a free position shot. The ThunderWolves tied the game at 2-2 with goals from Alix Zierden and Kiana Kelii.
Fort Lewis netted the next three goals to end the half with a 5-2 lead.
Brooke Galle found the back of the net from
Rebecca Miller's assist at 15:30. Carpenter scored her first goal of the game from a free position shot, followed by Cabrera's free position shot that led to her first score.
Miller assisted on Carpenter's second goal to start the second half at 28:35 to give the Skyhawks a 6-2 lead. CSUP added their third goal of the game one minute later before Carpenter struck again at 26:24, followed by Miller's first goal and third point of the game at 21:35.
CSU-Pueblo scored three straight goals in six minutes to cut the Skyhawks lead to two, 8-6. Fort Lewis responded by scoring seven of the next eight goals, including six straight. With 7:32 left in regulation, Cabrera netted her second goal of the game. McMahon added her third goal 13 seconds later, followed by
Jam Vertner's goal eight seconds after McMahon's.
Megan Longtain found the back of the net with 3:15 remaining from Vertner's assist, followed by Cabrera's goal at 2:16 and Miller's second goal with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Leading 14-7 with 29 ticks left, Galle added her second goal of the game for the final 15-7 win.
McMahon led both teams with 10 shots and four draw controls. Galle added seven shots while Cabera, Miller and Carpenter each had five shots. Longtain tallied a game high five ground balls.
Brie Walker recorded her first career win with two saves in 60 minutes of action.
The matchup was the first meeting between the two teams as this is the first year the ThunderWolves have sponsored women's lacrosse.
The Skyhawks will play their first match of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season at Adams State University Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
