GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – April 11, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College softball team rattled off 20 hits in two games at Colorado Mesa University, but were held without a win as the Mavericks won both games Saturday afternoon, 11-10 and 8-0 (six innings). The losses move the Skyhawks to 13-24 overall and 11-15 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mavericks, who entered the weekend in second place in the league standings, improve to 26-16 overall and 23-6 in the RMAC.
"Today our team came out on fire and showed what we are capable of," said head coach
Kira Zeiter. "Tomorrow we will put that together for 21 straight outs both games and we are in business. Our team enjoys and thrives on playing good competition."
In game one, the Skyhawks held an 8-0 lead after one and a half innings after charting four runs in their first two innings.
In the top of the first inning,
Tristen Gilbert hit a three-run home run down the left field line to drive in
Myndee Thompson and
Adriana Rosthenhausler, followed by
Mandy Owens single home run over the left field fence.
In the second inning,
Missy Fundora singled to the right side to score
Denae Fisher for a 5-0 lead.
Jeovanna Rios added three more runs off of a home run that scored Thompson and Fundora.
Colorado Mesa plated five in the bottom of the second to cut the Skyhawks lead to 8-5. Fisher scored her second run of the game in the top of the third off of Fundora's single to left field.
The Skyhawks lead fell in the bottom of the fourth when the Mavericks tied the game at 9-9 off of two home runs and three hits that scored four runs. CMU took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, 10-9, before the Skyhawks tied the game, 10-10 in the top of the seventh off of Fundora's double that plated Fisher.
Fort Lewis recorded 18 hits off of the Mavericks. Fundora, Thompson, Gilbert and Owens each posted three hits with Rios and Gilbert each tallying three runs batted in. Fisher led both teams with three runs scored.
Victoria Johnson started in the circle for the Skyhawks, pitching the first 3.1 innings and allowing nine runs (four earned) on seven hits and fanning three batters.
Olivia Goldberg pitched the final three innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits.
In the night cap game, Fort Lewis was held to two hits (Owens,
Kaitlyn Bending).
Kiley Raica recorded the start and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. Goldberg entered the game in relief and held the Mavericks to two runs on four hits in the final four innings.
Both teams will face off in doubleheader action Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
