COLORADO SPRINGS – April 18, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College softball team snapped a six game losing streak Saturday afternoon after defeating Colorado School of Mines, 7-6, in Colorado Springs at UCCS Mountain Lion Field in RMAC pod play action. The Skyhawks second game of the day was delayed in the bottom of the seventh inning because of weather.
Against CSM, Fort Lewis took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held onto the lead the entire game.
Missy Fundora started the scoring runs for the Skyhawks as the leadoff batter in the first inning. She reached based after hitting a double to right center and advanced to third base on a throwing error, which also resulted in
Adriana Rosthenhausler reaching first base.
Myndee Thompson drove home Fundora on a double to right field. With
Tristen Gilbert at the plate, Rosthenhausler scored the Skyhawks second run of the game and Thompson advanced to third on a passed ball. Gilbert brought home Thompson after tallying a home run to center field for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
The Orediggers added three runs in the first inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Fundora drove in
Denae Fisher in the fourth inning to extend the Skyhawks lead to 5-3. After a CSM run in the fifth inning, Fort Lewis answered with two more in the top of the sixth. With two outs and Fundora on third base and Thompson on second,
Mandy Owens doubled down the right field line to drive home Thompson and Fundora.
The Skyhawks held CSM to two runs in the sixth to seal the win, 7-6.
Victoria Johnson started in the circle and worked the first 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Fundora, Thompson and
Lauren Caldwell recorded two hits each as the Skyhawks posted 10 hits against the Orediggers. Fundora and Thompson each scored twice while Gilbert and Owens drove in two runs each.
In the night camp game against UCCS, the Skyhawks hold a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. The game has been postponed due to heavy rains and will resume Sunday at 12 p.m. Fort Lewis will continue with weekend pod play against UCCS and CSM immediately following the conclusion of Saturday's rain delay.
