DURANGO, Colo. – April 25, 2015 – Strong offenses by both the Fort Lewis College softball team and Colorado State University-Pueblo resulted in 42 hits and 32 runs in doubleheader action Saturday afternoon at Aspen Field, but it was the ThunderWolves who came out on top in both games, 6-2 and 14-10.
In the opening game, the Skyhawks trailed 4-0 before plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Nikki Klepfer scored the first run on a wild pitch and
Denae Fisher batted in
Mandy Owens to cut the lead to 4-2 before CSUP added two in the seventh.
Missy Fundora,
Myndee Thompson and Owens each tallied two hits as the Skyhawks finished the game with eight.
Victoria Johnson went the distance in the circle, allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out four batters.
In game two, Fort Lewis jumped to an 8-2 lead after two innings.
Jeovanna Rios tied the game at 2-2 in the first inning after hitting a two-run shot to score Fundora.
The Skyhawks added six runs on six hits in the second inning. Owens was the leadoff batter and hit a solo homerun. Fundora added another run with a double to right field that scored Fisher. With two outs, Thompson hit a homerun to bring home Fundora and
Kaitlyn Bending.
Tristen Gilbert added the final score of the inning when she doubled to bring home Rios.
Three runs in the third inning by the ThunderWolves cut the Skyhawks lead to 8-5. CSU-Pueblo tied the game in the fourth inning with three more runs (8-8). Rios' double to center field brought home Thompson in the fourth inning to give FLC a 9-8 lead.
The Pack regained the lead in the sixth inning and held onto it in the seventh after crossing home plate five times in the sixth inning and once more in the seventh.
Both teams stranded 10 runners on base in game two.
Kiley Raica started game two in the circle and pitched 3.2 innings. Raica allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and struck out two batters.
Olivia Goldberg relieved Raica in the fourth inning and pitched two innings, allowing five runs (all unearned) on three hits.
Victoria Johnson pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and fanning one batter.
Rios led the Skyhawks bats in game two going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Thompson and Gilbert each added three hits and Thompson chipped in three runs batted in.
Both teams will wrap up the four game series Sunday morning in double header action beginning at 11 a.m.
