Sanchez’ Golden Goal Lifts Skyhawks to Home Opening Win

DURANGO, Colo. – September 25, 2015 – Alicia Sanchez scored a golden goal off of a penalty kick five minutes and 42 seconds into overtime to lift the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Colorado Mesa University Friday afternoon at Dirks Field.  Friday's match was the Skyhawks first game on Dirks Field this season.

The Skyhawks improve to 4-2-1 on the year and 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Mavericks drop to 1-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.

The penalty kick was set up when Ariel Lopez was fouled at the top of the box chasing down a long ball.  The goal was Sanchez' second of the year.

Both teams were scoreless after one period of play before Ashley Wallace gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at 53:35.  Brook Milliet did a flip throw in at 57:22 that was deflected off of the goalkeeper for an own goal to tie the game at 1-1 and eventually send it to overtime.

The Mavericks tallied 12 shots in the game, one more than FLC.

Caitlyn Espinosa made eight saves in goal to improve to 4-2-1 between the posts.

The Skyhawks will play host to Westminster College Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will mark the first time both teams have faced each other.
