Women's Soccer Loses Lead, Fall at Westminster, 2-1

SALT LAKE CITY – October 16, 2016 – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team led for nearly 40 minutes Sunday afternoon at Westminster College, but the Griffins came back to score back-to-back goals within seven minutes to hand FLC a 2-1 loss.

"The girls did a pretty good job of fighting and continuing to play today," said head coach Jimmy Hall.  "We came close to tying the game back up a few times and just didn't quite have it.  Road trips are very difficult with the conference growing and getting so big, but I'm very proud of the girls and how they're managing the fatigue and how they're managing a difficult season."

The setback is the Skyhawks second straight road loss as they fell Friday night to Colorado Mesa University, 2-1.  The loss moves the Skyhawks to 6-6-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  WC improves to 8-2-3 overall and 5-1-3 in league games.

Renee Terrell found Alicia Sanchez who headed the ball into the goal at 28:30 in the first half to give the Skyhawks the 1-0 advantage.

Madison Roemer, who leads the league in goals and points, netted her ninth goal of the season at 67:48 to tie the game.  Heidi Lorschider scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute that resulted in the 2-1 loss.

FLC tallied only five shots against WC, four of which were on target.  Westminster posted 18 shot attempts and 10 shots on goal.

Britt Blomso made her first appearance in goal since Sept. 23.  Blomso made eight saves in 90 minutes.

The Skyhawks will return home on Sunday, Oct. 23 to play host to Adams State University at 12 p.m.
