Career Goal Leads to Skyhawks Win

GUNNISON, Colo. – October 2, 2016 – Andonia Apergis scored her first career goal in the 83rd minute to lead the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at Western State Colorado University.

The win was the Skyhawks second in a row as they improve to 5-4-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Mountaineers move to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the RMAC.

"We went down 1-0 in the first half after a little defensive mistake," said head coach Jimmy Hall.  "We were giving up some silly fouls and they played the free kick behind the line and it bounced in the goal.  In the second half we were a little more direct and more aggressive and it played out for us.  We scored a nice goal.  Courtney played a great touch inside and finished it inside the post.  On the second goal, Nia made a great run in the middle of the field and finished with a great touch beneath the post.  It was one of my favorite goals of the season."

WSCU took the first lead of the game at 40:33 on Kimberlee Bourelle's goal.  Courtney Riley scored the equalizer for her first goal of the season at 66:29, before Shayla Malecki found Apergis for the game-winning goal at 82:44.

The Skyhawks were edged in shots, 13-11, and both tams landed six shots on goal.

Riley led FLC in shot attempts with four, as well as shots on goal with three.

Kaylee Mickens improves to 3-1 between the posts after stopping five of six shots on target.

The Skyhawks will return home on Friday, Oct. 7 during FLC's Homecoming Week.  Fort Lewis will play host to Black Hills State University at 12:30 p.m.
