GUNNISON, Colo. – December 10, 2016 –
Ande Lampert and
Natalie Stilwell combined for nine blocks Saturday night to help the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team to a 56-39 win at Western State Colorado University at Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison, Colo.
With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. WSCU drops to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in RMAC games.
The 39 points are the fewest points the Skyhawks have allowed since Jan. 12, 2013 vs. Western New Mexico (37 points).
"We had a good defensive effort which kept the game at a distance," said head coach
Jason Flores. "We just didn't finish shots well enough offensively but we'll take the win and head back home before traveling again on Tuesday."
The Skyhawks defense held the Mountaineers to a 21.8 percent field goal shooting mark, including a game low 8.3 percent in the second quarter. FLC held WSCU scoreless in the second quarter for the first 9:26 before the Mountaineers hit a three-pointer with 34 seconds left in the half.
Lampert finished the game with five blocked shots to go with her four rebounds and two points. Stilwell came off the bench to add four blocked shots, four points and three rebounds.
Briana Clah and
Kayla Herrera tied for team high honors with 13 points each. Ten of Clah's 13 points came from the free throw line where she made all 10 attempts. Herrera netted two three-point field goals to go with her eight rebounds and three assists.
Alyssa Yocky chipped in a game high 11 rebounds and added five points and a blocked shot.
Fort Lewis took advantage of 18 turnovers by the Mountaineers to outscore WSCU, 17-7, off of turnovers.
