ST. GEORGE, Utah – February 6, 2016 – Ten runs on 12 hits led to a 10-4 win for the Fort Lewis College softball team Saturday morning over conference foe, Colorado State University-Pueblo, at the Dixie State University Invitational. The win was the Skyhawks first of the season. In the night cap game, the Skyhawks fell to No. 13 Humboldt State University in five innings, 8-0.
The ThunderWovles took a 1-0 lead after the first inning before the Skyhawks went up 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
Nikki Klepfer gave the Skyhawks their first score of the game after hitting a double to left center to score
Mandy Owens. Gianna Melaragno followed with her own double to score
Lauren Caldwell.
CSUP regained the lead in the top of the third inning, 3-2, before
Tehenia Telliano singled to left center that scored
Denae Fisher.
After a scoreless fourth inning by both teams, FLC jumped to a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning. Caldwell hit a double but was called out at third base after driving in Owens, Fisher and Angelique Elemen.
CSUP cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of sixth inning but the Skyhawks responded to plate four in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win, 10-4. Elemen hit a single and reached second base on a fielding error which resulted in
Missy Fundora and
Kiley Raica scoring for FLC.
Tristen Gilbert entered the game to pinch hit for Fisher. Gilbert doubled to left field that resulted in Elemen and
Adriana Rosthenhausler scoring the ninth and 10
th runs for FLC.
Caldwell went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and one run scored. Elemen went 2-for-2 while scoring two runs and batting in two more runs.
Denae Fisher and Owens each crossed home plate twice.
Olivia Goldberg recorded her first start of the season, pitching the first 2.2 innings. Goldberg allowed three runs on four hits before being relieved by
Victoria Johnson. Johnson surrendered one earned run and two hits while fanning six batters in the final 4.1 innings.
Against the Humboldt State Jacks, FLC was held to three hits. Fundora, Rosthenhausler and Elemen each tallied a hit while HSU scored eight runs on eight hits.
The Skyhawks will play their final two games of the DSU Invitational on Sunday against No. 22 West Texas A&M at 10 a.m., and No. 2 Dixie State University at 3 p.m.
