DURANGO, Colo. – September 2, 2016 – With four minutes and 40 seconds left in regulation, Midwestern State University converted on a free kick to score the game-winning goal Friday afternoon at Dirks Field, handing the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team a 3-2 setback in their season opening game.
FLC moves to 0-1-0 overall while the seventh ranked Mustangs move to 1-0-0.
The Mustangs took the first lead of the game at 18:05 when Jorge DeLeon headed in Flavio Guzman's corner kick. The Skyhawks evened the game at 22:49 when
Churchill Onumonu scored his first career goal for the Skyhawks. Onumonu cleaned up a shot from
Raul Pescador five yards out from the goal for a 1-1 score.
FLC came out of halftime for a quick score when
Tamino Kroeger found
Thomas de Faria down the middle of the field for a 2-1 score just 75 seconds into the half. Guzman struck again to knot the game in the 57
th minute before Gabriel Cavalcante's game winner at 85:20.
The Skyhawks accumulated 11 shots to the Mustangs 16, and out-shot MSU with shots on goal, 6-5.
Elliot Chadderton made two saves in goal in 90 minutes of action.
FLC will travel to Colorado Mesa University on Sunday for a 12 p.m. non-conference.
