Football Loses 17-Point Lead; Fall to Mustangs, 20-17

SILVER CITY, N.M. – October 21, 2017 – After taking a 17-0 lead into halftime, the Fort Lewis College football team was out-scored in the second half, 20-0, as they fell to Western New Mexico University Saturday afternoon in Silver City, N.M., 20-17.
 
The loss moves FLC to 3-5 on the season, while the win was the second of the season for the Mustangs (2-6).
 
The Skyhawks first drive of the game ended in a lost fumble.  FLC's defense responded, forcing the Mustangs to turn the ball over on downs. 
 
The turnover set up FLC's first scoring drive as they started on their own 39-yard line.  Six plays and 61 yards later, Tyler Telphy punched it in from one yard out for a 7-0 Skyhawks lead at 7:44 in the first quarter.
 
FLC added three points to the scoreboard with 3:16 left in the half after Ben Raybon made a 36-yard field goal.  The score was set up after Bo Coleman found Jake Lowry for a 48-yard connection, putting the Skyhawks on the WNMU seven-yard line.  Coleman was sacked three straight plays for a loss of 11 yards, resulting in Raybon's sixth made field goal of the season.
 
The Skyhawks struck again with only seven ticks left in the half.  Tyrell Thomas forced a Mustangs fumble which was recovered by Isiah Mayberry at the WNMU 42-yard line.  On fourth down and four yards to go on the WNMU 20, the Mustangs committed a penalty giving a first down for FLC.  Lowry closed the drive with a nine-yard rush, pushing the Skyhawks lead to 17-0 at the half. 
 
Western New Mexico capped a 17-play, 44-yard drive to open the second half with a 40-yard field goal.
 
The Msutangs intercepted FLC on the Skyhawks first drive of the half, resulting in a touchdown for WNMU, cutting into the Skyhawks lead, 17-10.
 
WNMU knotted the game at 17-17 to open the final stanza. 
 
FLC turned the ball over on downs on their second drive of the quarter, leading to WNMU's 27-yard game-winning field with 52 seconds left in regulation.
 
The Skyhawks finished with 256 yards of total offense (154 rushing yards).
 
Telphy carried the ball 18 times for 49 yards and one touchdown.  Lowry added 42 yards on the ground on nine carries and a touchdown. 
 
Mason Hatton caught a team high three passes for 33 yards.
 
Max Peets punted five times, averaging 48.4 yards per punt.  His longest of the game was 57 yards.
 
Darrian Stickney recorded a game high 14 tackles (five solo). 
 
FLC's defense sacked the Mustangs twice for a loss of 18 yards.  Both sacks came from Christopher Blanton.
 
Fort Lewis returns home Oct. 28 to play host to South Dakota School of Mines on Oct. 28. Kickoff is at 12 p.m.
