LAS VEGAS, N.M. – November 4, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College football team scored 27 of their 30 points in the second half, including 21 points off of turnovers as the Skyhawks defeated New Mexico Highlands University at Perkins Stadium on Senior Day, 30-20.
FLC scored three points on their opening drive of the game, driving down the field 56 yards that ended in a 41-yard field goal by
Ben Raybon.
The Skyhawks defense forced NMHU to punt on their first four drives of the game.
The Cowboys took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter, completing an 80-yard, six-play drive and a four point lead they would take into halftime.
FLC came within one point of the Cowboys lead, 7-6, on their first possession of the second half. FLC's defense forced NMHU to turn the ball over on downs, setting up the Skyhawks opening drive of the second half on NMHU's 33-yard line. Six yards later, Raybon made a 43-yard field.
On the Cowboys ensuing drive,
Joshua Cuellar intercepted the ball on the second play of the drive, and returned the ball 25 yards into the endzone for a 13-7 FLC lead.
NMHU regained the lead with 2:08 left in the third quarter, 14-13, for the third lead change of the game.
After starting the final stanza with a 29-yard punt,
Christian Woo gave the ball back to Fort Lewis after an interception on NMHU's first play of the quarter. The interception led to a three play, 17-yard drive that was capped off with
Jake Lowry finding
Ta'Jon Mondy for the touchdown, and giving FLC a 20-14 lead they would not lose.
The defense forced another turnover on the Cowboys second play of the quarter.
Daniel Walker forced a fumble on NMHU's 27-yard line that was recovered by
OJ Thompson. One play later,
Brayden Lucero scored the Skyhawks third touchdown of the game after he ran the ball in from 27-yards out.
Raybon scored his 12
th point of the game on a 29-yard field goal, extending the Skyhawks lead to 16 points, 30-14.
NMHU struck one last time with 81 ticks left in the game. A missed two-point attempt after the touchdown and an on-side kick attempt recovered by
AJ Shaw sealed the win, 30-20.
The Skyhawks ran 67 plays for 241 yards, 157 of which came on the ground.
PJ Hall led the Skyhawks with 56 rushing yards on 17 carries. Lucero averaged 6.2 yards per carry with nine rushes for 56 yards and a score.
Lowry completed 10-of-23 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Mondy caught three passes for 36 yards as Lowry completed passes to five different receivers.
Max Peets averaged 41 yards on nine punts. His longest punt of the day went for 56 yards. Five of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line and one was a touchback.
Darrian Stickney led the Skyhawks defense with 11 tackles (six solo). Three of his tackles went for a loss of nine yards.
Isiah Mayberry added 10 tackles (seven solo), a sack (six yards) and two tackles for a loss of seven yards.
Two of
Christopher Blanton's five tackles went for a loss of 12 yards, one of which was a sack (seven yards).
The Skyhawks defense has tallied 13 interceptions this season, and returned them for 208 yards and five touchdowns.
FLC will play their final game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. against Dixie State University.
