ST. LEO, Fla. – March 5, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team opened their season Sunday afternoon in St. Leo, Fla. The Skyhawks fell to St. Leo University, 12-7.
The Lions scored the first three goals of the game before
Kelli Warmouth netted her first goal of the season at 17:05 in the first half. Five minutes later she scored her second goal of the game to cut into St. Leo's lead, 4-2.
Alyssa Montoya scored the Skyhawks third goal of the game at 5:03 to bring FLC within one goal, 4-3. With 49 ticks left in the half, SLU struck again to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
The home team added two goals in less than two minutes to open the second period for a 7-3 lead.
Ryann Pierce found the back of the net at 17:35. Following SLU's eighth goal of the game,
Sammy Delli recorded her first career goal at 16:54 to bring the Skyhawks within three, 8-5.
Brooke Galle scored the final two goals of the game for FLC less than a minute apart, but SLU closed the game with three unanswered goals to seal the win, 12-7.
FLC was outshot, 33-16. The Skyhawks attempted eight shots in each half. The Lions picked up 32 ground balls to FLC's 21.
Daris Wienk saw her first action in goal for the Skyhawks, making 10 saves.
Megan Longtain accounted for four of the Skyhawks nine caused turnovers. Longtain also led the Skyhawks in groundballs with five.
The Skyhawks will face No. 5 Florida Southern College on Monday at 9 a.m. (MST).
