DURANGO, Colo. – September 16, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College football team could not overcome a 13-point deficit in the first half to Adams State University, falling 34-27 in the 52
nd annual Musket Game at Ray Dennison Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops FLC to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in league games. ASU improves to 2-1 overall (2-1 RMAC). FLC had previously won the last two Musket Games, and three of the last four.
Fort Lewis scored on their opening drive of the game.
Mason Hatton caught an 18-yard pass from
Bo Coleman for a 7-0 lead at 8:16 in the first quarter, capping off a seven play, 85-yard drive.
Adams State tied the game with 51 seconds left in the opening stanza.
The Grizzlies scored back-to-back touchdowns in the second quarter. A missed extra point attempt gave ASU a 20-7 lead with 2:47 remaining in the first half.
Ben Raybon cut the lead down to 10 points after converting a 20-yard field goal with just two ticks left in the half.
On the Skyhawks opening drive of the second half, Coleman found the end zone from one yard out to bring FLC within three points, 20-17.
The Grizzlies regained their 10-point lead at 8:06 in the third quarter after a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Raybon made his second field goal attempt of the game at 3:53 in the third quarter, capping off an eight play, 79-yard drive.
Trailing 20-17, the Skyhawks deficit increased to 10 points after ASU scored a touchdown from a 65-yard pass from Nick Rooney to Marquese Surrel.
The last score of the game came with 9:15 left in regulation when
Tyler Telphy ran in the endzone from two yards out.
FLC's last drive of the game started with 3:32 left in regulation. The Skyhawks ran 13 plays for 43 yards before turning the ball over on downs on fourth-and-five on the ASU 25-yard line.
Telphy and
PJ Hall each rushed for over 100 yards. Telphy carried the ball 13 times for 125 yards and a touchdown. Hall netted 119 yards on 20 carries.
Coleman completed 14-of-31 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown.
Hatton caught six passes for 78 yards and
Arealous Hughes added five catches for 60 yards.
Defensively, the Skyhawks were led by Dominic Coachrane's and
Darrian Stickney's 10 tackles each. One of Cochrane's tackles went for a loss of four yards.
Daniel Walker tallied nine tackles, including a tackle for a two-yard loss.
Donell Pleasant III posted an interception in the endzone to go with his five tackles (four solo).
Fort Lewis finished with 438 yards of total offense on 81 plays. FLC racked up 257 yards on the ground while holding ASU to 144 rushing yards.
The Skyhawks will begin a three-game road trip Sept. 23 at Colorado Mesa University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
