DURANGO – September 2, 2017 – A 16-0 first half lead by the Fort Lewis College football team was disrupted by Chadron State College Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. The Skyhawks fell to the Eagles in the season opening game, 25-19.
Both teams' opening drive resulted in punts before FLC scored the first points of the season.
Bo Coleman capped off an 11-play, 80-yard drive with a 28-yard run into the endzone with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter.
Freshman
Ben Raybon scored his first points of his collegiate career after making a 37-yard field goal with 25 ticks left in the opening stanza to give the Skyhawks a 10-0 lead.
The Skyhawks defense held the Eagles to five passing yards and negative one rushing yard in the first quarter.
Dre Cortez picked off the Eagles for his first career pick-six, boosting the Skyhawks lead to 16-0 (missed extra point attempt).
The Eagles Matt Vinson found Tevon Wright for a 57-yard touchdown pass to give CSC their first points of the game. Brian Wood converted on the two-point play.
FLC led 16-8 at the half, but were outscored 17-3 in the second half.
On the second play of the second half, the Eagles Dalton Hoist connected with Stevann Brown for a 75-yard touchdown score to give CSC their first lead of the game, 18-16.
FLC was held to two first downs and 28 yards of total offense in the third quarter.
Less than one minute into the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored their final touchdown of the game to take a 25-16 lead.
On the ensuing and final drive for the Skyhawks, Raybon put the ball through the uprights on a 37-yard field goal attempt before the Eagles burned the final 7:39 off the clock.
The Skyhawks ran for 215 yards on the ground and completed 6-of-13 passes for 49 yards. CSC accounted for 342 yards of total offense, 250 of which came through the air.
Coleman rushed 20 times for 87 yards and a score to lead the Skyhawks run game.
Arealous Hughes caught two of Coleman's passes for 16 yards.
Isiah Mayberry and
Dominic Cochrane each tallied seven tackles (six solo). Mayberry added two tackles for a loss of five yards. Two of
Darrian Stickney's seven tackles went for a loss of four yards, including a forced fumble.
FLC will play their first road game of the season on Sept. 9 at Black Hills State University. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
