DURANGO, Colo. – September 24, 2017 – Facing the 10
th-ranked team in the nation and playing down two players, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team drew a 1-1 double overtime tie against Colorado Mesa University Sunday afternoon at Dirks Field.
After a scoreless 74 minutes, the Mavericks committed a foul in the penalty box, resulting in
Salifu Jatta converting a penalty kick at 74:02 to give FLC a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, a hand ball foul by FLC gave CMU a penalty kick, which was made by Moshe Perez.
FLC played one man down starting at 81:07 after a Skyhawk received his second yellow card of the game. At 89:37, FLC went down another player, giving CMU an 11-9 player advantage.
Both teams remained scoreless after the penalty kicks, sending the game into overtime. After 20 minutes of overtime, the Skyhawks and Mavericks drew a 1-1 tie.
CMU edged the Skyhawks on shot attempts, 14-11.
Jatta came off the bench to lead FLC with three shots (two shots on goal).
Churchill Onumonu and
Ryan Lee each added two shots.
Peter Byrne stopped five of six shots on goal as he moves to 2-2-4 on the season.
The Skyhawks will travel to Adams State University on Sept. 29 for a 4 p.m. match, before returning home to play host to UCCS at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.
