Early Goal for Griffins Holds up Against Women’s Soccer

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Westminster College didn't wait long, as they struck just 12 seconds in and it turned out to be the game-winning goal against the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team on Friday. The Griffins added a late marker in the second half to take the 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

There were only 12 shots combined in the game, with Westminster (9-3-0, 6-2-0 RMAC) holding a 10-2 edge on 7-0 on goal.

It was certainly a fast start by the Griffins, as right off the start, they pushed it up field and Aimee Kurfurst was able to get the shot past Britt Blomso for the 1-0 lead 12 seconds in for Westminster.

Dylan Barker tried to answer a few minutes later when her shot in the fourth minute just missed wide right. Westminster would generate one more shot on goal in the 33rd minute, with a header attempt that was saved by Blomso to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.

The Griffins generated a few chances throughout the early parts of the second half before netting their second goal at the 71:39 mark to move ahead 2-0.

FLC, just like after the first goal in the first half, answered back with a shot by Ally Holloway that missed wide left.

Westminster tallied a few more chances over the final minutes, but Kaylee Mickens made the saves to keep the score 2-0.

Blomso started and played the first 78:26 in net, making two saves. Mickens went the final 11:34 and recorded three saves.

McKell Kellogg and Brynnae Braun had two shots each for Westminster. In net, Hillary Weixler played all 90 minutes and didn't have a shot on goal.

FLC will continue their Utah road swing on Sunday when they will play Dixie State in St. George starting at noon. Dixie State defeated Adams State 4-0 earlier on Friday.
