Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brian Kortz

Men’s Soccer Records Big Win Over Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. – Looking for a game to turn the corner, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team may have just got that thanks to a big win over Westminster College on Friday afternoon. Having lost their previous four games, the Skyhawks struck early and held off the Griffins in claiming the 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win at Dirks Field.

The game played out just as you would expect from these two teams, after already having played a 1-0 game in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago.

FLC came out aggressive from the start and then led to an early chance for Bar Hazut. Following a nice pass from Ty Lang, Hazut dribbled around the right side of the box and fired a low shot into the left corner of the net to give the Skyhawks a goal and 1-0 lead just over four minutes in. It was Hazut's sixth goal of the season.

It was a difficult game for either team to get much going offensively, with just 14 total shots and only four ending up on goal. The first half featured a 3-2 shot edge for the Skyhawks and then they ramped that up to 6-3 in the second half to hold a 9-5 advantage and also a 3-1 edge on goal.

A few minutes after the Hazut goal, Westminster (9-3-1, 5-3-1 RMAC) had a look, but the shot went wide. Lang had a chance in the 14th minute, but he shot was blocked. Following a shot that was just high by Hakeem Rabiu, Westminster came back and fired their first shot on goal that Ventura Salcido turned away for the save in the 27th minute.

That would be all the chances through the first 45 minutes and right out of the locker rooms, FLC went right to work offensively getting a shot by Rabiu that was just saved by Max Medley and as the ball got loose, Rabiu nearly collected and put it back in, but the shot went just wide.

Down the stretch, Coleman Kane got loose for a shot near the top of the box that Medley saves and shortly after that, Nicolas Perez had a shot that was blocked. With just over eight minutes left to play, FLC was able to keep Westminster without a solid scoring chance to claim the 1-0 victory.

Rabiu led the Skyhawks with four shots. In net, Ventura Salcido played all 90 minutes to record his third shutout of the season in making a save. Amit Hefer had two shots to lead Westminster, while Medley made two saves in playing all 90 minutes.

FLC will look to carry over the momentum from the win Friday into Senior Day on Sunday against Dixie State starting at 1 p.m. Senior Day festivities will begin around 12:45 p.m. for the five Skyhawk seniors in Lucas Matelich, Steen Shober, Raul Pescador, Nicolas Perez and Coleman Kane.
