Men’s Soccer Goes Down-to-the-Wire on Senior Day Against TrailBlazers

DURANGO, Colo. – It was another quick start that the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team was looking for, but despite getting out to the early lead just under four minutes in, Dixie State University fought back to tie and go ahead in claiming the 2-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Sunday on Senior Day at Dirks Field.

FLC (6-5-2, 4-5-1 RMAC) had the start they were looking for, as following a few pushes into the offensive zone, Hakeem Rabiu was able to break through with a goal. Max Fuentes Carrera moved the ball from the midfield to Ty Lang who sent a perfect ball into the box that Rabiu was waiting for and he headed it home at the 3:43 mark to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead. It was Rabiu's third goal of the season.

FLC kept pushing, getting a shot on goal by Fuentes Carrera that was saved by Zach Nielson around the 20-minute mark and then he had a pair of corner kicks a few minutes later that just missed.

Just when it seemed the Skyhawks had all the momentum going, Dixie State (4-8-2, 2-6-2 RMAC) was able to turn the pressure and generate back-to-back corner kicks near the 30-minute mark. The last corner that was taken by Dominic Damato ended up landing right in the box for Idris Alabi who jumped high to knock the goal home with a header to knot the game at one.

Following a save by Ventura Salcido a few minutes later, FLC closed the half strong getting a shot by Ryan Lee, Coleman Kane and then one right at the end by Bar Hazut that was saved to keep the game tied at one at halftime.

To start the second half, each team had some good chances right away with a shot by Dixie State going wide of the goal and then a shot by Rabiu was corralled by Nielson for the save. Just past the 50-minute mark, Ricky Nunez pushed the TrailBlazers ahead when he turned a foul in the box into a penalty kick goal for the 2-1 lead.

FLC looked to have the game tied just past the 66-minute mark when Lee ripped a shot that hit the right post and then as the ball bounced around, Hazut ripped a shot that was blocked by a defender before finally Nielson jumped on the ball just before the Skyhawks were able to get another shot off.

At the 72-minute mark, a red card on Dixie State made the TrailBlazers play a man down the rest of the way. The Skyhawk kept the rush coming with Landon Gibson getting off a shot just outside the box that was saved and then after a corner kick by Lang, Rabiu just missed a chance high off a free kick with two minutes to play.

Down to the final seconds, FLC was able to get one last rush that resulted in a corner kick with 15 seconds left. Hurrying to get the chance off in time, Lang delivered the ball in the box that bounced around and as FLC settled the ball to launch a shot, a foul was called on FLC that ran out the rest of the clock giving Dixie State the 2-1 victory.

Five FLC seniors were honored before the game in Lucas Matelich, Steen Shober, Raul Pescador, Nicolas Perez and Coleman Kane.
Gibson, Rabiu, Hazut and Lee all had three shots to lead FLC. Salcido played all 90 minutes in net and made three saves.

Ascari Robles led Dixie State with three shots, while Cole Shaffer and Dresdan Quackenbush added two shots apiece. In net, Nielson went all 90 minutes and came away with five saves.

The Skyhawks are currently seventh in the RMAC standings with 13 conference points. UCCS is just ahead of FLC with 17 points, while MSU Denver sits fifth with 18 and Westminster in fourth with 19 points.

FLC will hit the road this coming week as they will play at South Dakota Mines on Friday starting at 6 p.m. and then will close the trip on Sunday in Golden against nationally-ranked Colorado School of Mines beginning at noon.
