Volleyball Rolls Past South Dakota Mines for Sixth RMAC Win

DURANGO, Colo. – Continuing to dominate at home has been a theme for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team this year and after a 3-1 (25-22, 25-12, 21-25, 25-17) win over South Dakota Mines Saturday night, the Skyhawks are now 5-1 at Whalen Gym this year.

Not only did the win move FLC (6-11, 6-7 RMAC) to their fifth at home this year, but also the sixth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory. FLC now sits alone in eighth place in the RMAC standings, holding a half-game lead over Chadron State at 5-7. Adams State and Westminster sit a game back at 5-8.

It was a strong offensive night with the Skyhawks posting a .269 percentage, collecting 62 kills to 16 errors in 171 chances. FLC also held a 4-0 edge on service aces, 57-52 in assists, 96-82 in digs and 62-53 in kills.

Bailey Longacre led the way in three categories including kills (17), service aces (2) and blocks (3). Kendra Swackenberg added 45 assists and another double-double with 20 digs. Megan Graefe led the defense in digs with 22. Haley Christiansen also added a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs. Christiansen and Wedhorn each hit .333, while LeBlanc added a .318 percentage and Longacre at .286.

FLC came out on fire to start the match going on a 4-0 run with a pair of kills by Christiansen and Swackenberg at the end of the run. Despite the strong start, South Dakota Mines (4-18, 1-12 RMAC) didn't go away, coming back to take a 17-16 lead. Tied at 18, the Skyhawks used a strong 4-1 run to start to pull away with Longacre, Swackenberg, Christiansen and Hannah Martinez all tallying points for a 23-19 lead. Christiansen and Tye Wedhorn then sealed the set with a pair of kills for the 25-22 first set win.

The second set had a similar start with Swackenberg and Wedhorn tallying points for an early 3-0 lead. Ahead 4-2, Wedhorn ripped a kill to help ignite a 4-0 run with Longacre tallying a pair of kills around a Hardrocker error for the 8-2 lead. FLC just kep the offense coming with Christiansen, Maddie LeBlanc and Wedhorn adding kills later in the set to move in front 21-7. A Martinez kill and then a strong kill by Longacre sealed the set at 25-12 to move FLC out to a 2-0 match lead.

South Dakota Mines controlled play throughout the third set and were still in front 15-13 when FLC began to work their way back into the set. A Longacre kill, a kill by Christiansen and then a service ace by Longacre had the Skyhawks holding an 18-16 lead. After a run by the Hardrockers, FLC fought back to tie at 20 when South Dakota Mines went on a 5-1 run to take the set at 25-21 to move the match to a fourth set.

The Hardrockers fed off the momentum in the fourth set, quickly jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Trailing 9-4, FLC got things going with a kill by Longacre to trigger a 6-0 run to move in front. Longacre also added a service ace, another kill and then after a Wedhorn kill, Christiansen posted a kill for the 10-9 lead. Ahead 20-17, FLC pulled away when a kill by Swackenberg started a 5-0 run to end the set and the match. During the run, Christiansen had a pair of kills, Wedhorn added a kill and then on match point, Longacre posted another kill for the 25-17 set win and 3-1 match victory.

Dana Thomson led the Hardrockers with 17 kills, Anna Breidt had three blocks, Shyann Bastian dished out 43 assists and Tana Dahlberg had 21 digs.

FLC will continue their home stand this coming Friday when they will host Western State starting at 7 p.m.
