Lucero Rushes for Over 100 Yards on Senior Day Against Mountaineers

DURANGO, Colo. – Brayden Lucero broke free for 107 yards rushing and added a touchdown, but despite the strong effort on the ground, Western Colorado University took advantage of some big plays by their defense to defeat the Fort Lewis College football team 40-20 on Senior Day Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The 16 Skyhawk seniors were honored before the game.

Lucero rushed 16 times for 107 yards, with a touchdown and a long carry of 29 yards to average 6.7 yards per attempt. Senior Nick McNamee completed 5-15 for 125 yards and had a 91-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Ta'Jon Mondy-Smith.

Mondy-Smith finished with two catches for 117 yards and a score. Senior Mason Hatton added four catches for 17 yards. Darrian Stickney led the defense with 10 tackles and had a pass breakup. Senior Isiah Mayberry added eight tackles, with one for loss. George Marpaung was constantly in the backfield coming away with four tackles for loss.

Western Colorado University (1-7, 1-6 RMAC) jumped on the board first, taking advantage of a muffed snap and punt that left them at the FLC (1-7, 1-7 RMAC) 27. Four plays later, Dylan Jacob completed the first of four touchdown passes to Zach Manchester for 15 yards for the 6-0 lead as the extra point was missed hitting the upright.

Western made it 13-0 when a big 48-yard run helped setup a Jacob nine-yard TD pass to Elijah Gillespi for a 13-0 lead with 7:21 to play in the opening quarter.

The Skyhawks responded on the next drive, picking up a pair of third downs before Jack Harper capped the nine play, 75-yard drive with a 15-yard run to the end zone. The extra point was missed leaving the Mountaineers in front 13-6 late in the first quarter.

With each defense coming up with big stops throughout the second quarter, a turnover deep in FLC territory gave Western the ball at the FLC 6. After an incomplete pass, a six-yard strike from Jacob to Gillespi moved the lead to 20-6 with 2:46 to play before halftime.

Western was able to get the ball back and moved 70 yards before the half to tally another touchdown and take a 27-6 lead into halftime.

A big play helped ignite FLC early in the third quarter when McNamee hit Mondy-Smith near midfield and he was able to break away from the tackle and go 91 yards for the touchdown to trim the deficit to 14 at 27-13 with 9:43 to play in the third quarter.

The FLC defense forced a quick punt, but on the ensuing drive, the pass was intercepted by Josh Nelson at the FLC 43 and returned all the way for the touchdown to push Western out to a 34-13 lead.

The Mountaineers added a pair of field goals and then FLC closed the scoring in the fourth quarter when Lucero finished off a six play, 71-yard drive with an 11-yard scamper to the end zone to provide the final margin of 40-20.

Western held a 374-302 edge in total yards, including 247-186 through the air. It was close on the ground with the Mountaineers holding the slight 127-116 edge. Western held a couple of key stats that included being plus-six in turnovers and holding the ball for nearly 37 minutes (36:49).

Jacob completed 27-40 for 247 yards and four touchdowns to lead Western. Isaac Fuqua added 14 rushes for 77 yards. Jacob also rushed six times for 30 yards. Gillespi caught seven passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Barton added seven catches for 71 yards and a score. Lane Farris led the defense with nine tackles and had both a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Nelson had a pair of interceptions.

With the final home game completed, FLC will now hit the road for the final two games of the regular season, starting first with nationally-ranked CSU-Pueblo this coming Saturday starting at noon. The ThunderWolves held off Adams State in Alamosa, 29-22, earlier Saturday.
