Jones Tallies 12 Tackles at #13 CSU-Pueblo

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. – Duane Jones did all he could on the defensive end for the Fort Lewis College football team piling up 12 tackles, nine solo, along with 2.5 tackles for loss and a pair of passes broken up as #13 CSU-Pueblo started early on their way to taking the 39-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

It was tough for FLC (1-8, 1-8 RMAC) to move the ball against one of the top defenses in Division II as the Skyhawks had 72 yards compared to 358 for CSU-Pueblo (8-1, 7-1 RMAC). Outside of the big game by Jones, Darrian Stickney added eight tackles, two for loss and both Donell Pleasant III and Max Scott added seven tackles apiece, with Pleasant III compiling a tackle for loss and three passes broken up.

The FLC defense was tested right away following a big kickoff return that had the ThunderWolves at the FLC 24. They were able to stuff CSU-Pueblo on three plays to force a field goal attempt from 45 yards that was missed.

After converting a field goal on their next drive, CSU-Pueblo added a safety on the ensuing kickoff, as the ball was fumbled at the FLC 10 and after the dust settled, FLC fell back on the ball in the end zone for a safety giving CSU-Pueblo a 5-0 lead just over five minutes in.

The defense continued to make big plays, forcing another field goal attempt on the ensuing safety punt leaving the ThunderWolves ahead 8-0.

Another field goal closed the scoring in the first quarter and after a pair of touchdowns, CSU-Pueblo held a 25-0 lead at halftime.

FLC put together a strong drive midway through the third quarter that chewed up 11 plays and 37 yards, but after getting to the CSU-Pueblo 38, the drive stalled and the Skyhawks were forced to punt.

The ThunderWolves scored touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to provide the final margin of 39-0.

Ta'Jon Mondy-Smith spent most of his time under center completing 3-8 for 17 yards and he also rushed for 14 yards. Brayden Lucero tallied 37 yards on 14 carries, with a long of 14. Sam Adams caught three passes for 17 yards.

Brandon Edwards completed 9-17 for 98 yards and a touchdown to lead CSU-Pueblo. AJ Thompson also added 6-7 for 48 yards. Austin Micci rushed for 51 yards, followed by 47 from Thompson. Max Fine caught two passes for 60 yards. Brandon Payer led the defense with 10 tackles, with one for loss, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

FLC will have the coming week off for a bye week before concluding the 2018 season on Saturday, Nov. 10 when they will make the long drive to Rapid City, S.D., to face South Dakota Mines starting at 1 p.m.
